Rugby-turned-Titans star’s remarkable recovery from horror spinal injury

Titans recruit Carter Gordon is on the mend after suffering a spinal problem, with The Sydney Morning Herald reporting he could be available to play in the last four rounds of the season.

Gordon, who switched to rugby league this season after playing at five-eighth for the Wallabies in the 2023 Rugby World Cup, went down with the injury in the pre-season.

The 24-year-old was suffering back spasms and headaches after carrying the ball, and it was then found he had a cerebrospinal fluid leak, which is a condition impacting the fluid around the spinal cord and the brain.

In the first instance it was hoped that Gordon wouldn’t require surgery, but he did undergo surgery last month and has now started running again.

Gordon appeared to be on track to become Kieran Foran’s successor in the halves at the Titans, prior to the injury.

There is an outside chance Gordon could make his NRL debut this season, but it’s more likely he will play in the Queensland Cup once he returns to full fitness.

Gordon is likely to resume contact training in the not too distant future.

It’s been a difficult year for Gordon’s family, with his brother, Super Rugby player Mason, forced into retirement at just 22 years of age.

Mason, who spent time at the Melbourne Rebels and Queensland Reds, had ongoing symptoms after suffering a concussion in the pre-season.
