Exiled Cowboys star’s cross-town switch to join rival’s halves logjam: Transfer Whispers

The Broncos have reportedly signed rising Cowboys playmaker Tom Duffy to shadow veteran Adam Reynolds after the young gun wasn’t offered an extension to remain in Townsville.

That is according to Code Sports, who are reporting the 22-year-old was deemed surplus to requirements by current head coach Todd Payten.

Current understudy Jock Madden signed a two-year deal to return to the Tigers in 2026, while Michael Maguire also has Coby Black and Josh Rogers on the club’s books next year.

Ben Hunt has also been plying his trade at hooker, meaning Duffy will join a cohort of four back-up halves vying for first crack should Adam Reynolds or Ezra Mam suffer an injury.

Duffy, who has played five NRL games this year, reportedly had offers to make a move to the Super League.

However, his preference was to remain in Australia and fight for place in the NRL, eyeing Reynolds’ No.7 jersey in 2027.

Duffy has previously played for the Australian Schoolboys side and was a Queensland under 19s halfback, having won the halfback spot in Round 1 for the Cowboys.

The talented playmaker is a Townsville product and played 20 reserve grade games in 2023, tallying 10 try assists before he was promoted to the NRL squad in 2024.
