‘Haven’t been able to make an offer’: Origin star reportedly set to be squeezed out at Broncos

The fairytale return of Gehamat Shibasaki could end in tears with the reborn Origin star facing being squeezed out of the Broncos due to a salary cap squeeze as clubs line up for his services.

WWOS’ The Mole reported the Broncos are keen to keep Shibasaki on their books, but are struggling to fit him in their salary cap after re-signing a number of stars to long-term deals.

Shibasaki’s manager has been inundated with interest in his client amid a lack of quality centres across the NRL.

“Gehamat loves the Broncos after the season he has had and is contracted to them for next season,” his manager Wade Rushton told Wide World of Sports.

“But they haven’t been able to make him an offer beyond that and so on November 1, I’m expecting quite a few clubs to show formal interest.

“He’s had a fantastic year and is a great story – and he will keep working hard on his game.”

The Broncos have already been forced to release Tyson Smoothy (Trinity Wakefield) and Selwyn Cobbo (Dolphins) due to the salary cap squeeze.

Several other Broncos players, including forwards Kobe Hetherington Jack Gosiewski also face uncertain futures at the club.

The 27-year-old has scored 18 tries in 46 NRL games, including 12 in 16 games in his return to the NRL in 2025, which also saw him debut for the Maroons.

He is reportedly on just $85,000 this year, as a development contract player, which will rise to a still-modest $140,000 next season when he is promoted to a top-30 contract.

Shibasaki told AAP he didn’t want to get ahead of himself.

“When it comes to (November 1) I will think about that but what I have been doing is narrowing my focus to now. That has been a big part of my success so far,” Shibasaki said.

“That is another thing I have got to sit down with my family and talk about.

“You look at my age now and I am coming to the older side of things. I will focus on that when the time comes.”
