‘I’m losing sleep’: Frustrated Payten puts players on notice over crippling Cowboys flaw

A frustrated Cowboys coach Todd Payten says he is “losing sleep” as errors once again crippled his side in a disappointing 12-8 defeat to the Bulldogs in Townsville.

The Cowboys led for most of the match and crossed the try line twice in the second half only for both efforts to be disallowed.

The loss leaves the Cowboys in 12th place on the NRL ladder and in danger of missing the finals.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Payten made it clear some players were not performing at an NRL level.

“We’ve got some parts of our game that are costing us dearly. And I’m losing sleep at night working out how to fix that,” he said.

Pressed again on how concerning the 17 errors in the match were, Payten was direct in his feelings,

“And where they happen. In our own half and yep, it’s concerning,” he said.

“I lose sleep at night thinking about it, working out ways of getting through it.

“In the end, we’ve got some guys who have just got to get their job done.

“NRL is hard, but that’s not a good enough excuse.

“The same people make the same stuff.”

Payten was also asked about the changes he made to his side before kick off and whether they were long-term moves.

Tom Dearden switching to the right edge of the field, swapping places with Jaxon Purdue while Jeremiah Nanai was also moved back to his familiar right edge. Reuben Cotter played on the left edge in his first NRL start in the No.11 jersey.

Murray Taulagi, meanwhile, was named in the centres just before kick-off, but played on the left wing outside Braidon Burns and Purdue.

“I haven’t given it a lot of thought. I’m not opposed to running it out that way next week,” he said,

“Things went awry yesterday with Jake (Clifford) doing his quad and then having a look at how both edges match up, decided to go with the change

“Food for thought and we will discuss it over the next couple of days.
