‘We’ve moved forward’: Mam-Leniu’s extraordinary moment after Origin II ends bitter feud

Ezra Mam and Spencer Leniu have buried the hatchet following Origin Game II, putting an end to their public feud stemming back to last season’s Las Vegas opener.

Mam and Leniu were embroiled in an ugly racial row during the Broncos-Roosters clash in Vegas when Leniu called Mam a “monkey”.

Vision captured Mam and Leniu hugging on the Optus Stadium turf on Wednesday night before engaging in a brief discussion.

Mam, who was Queensland’s 18th man, told the SMH that he was pleased he and Leniu were able to clear the air.

“It’s great that me and Spencer got the chance to see each other face-to-face last night,” Mam said.

“As for the racial vilification issue, that’s in the past now. We’ve moved forward.”

Mam has only recently returned from a nine-game suspension for crashing his car back in October while under the influence of drugs in an incident that hospitalised a young girl.

Many believe the ban wasn’t harsh enough and that has caused some angst among fans.

Mam was booed heavily during a Broncos game at Brookvale against the Sea Eagles three weeks ago, with the five-eighth making some odd comments post-game where he seemed to attribute the booing to his incident with Leniu over a year earlier.

He would clarify those comments when speaking to the SMH.

“The story in the media that said I thought I was being booed at Brookvale because of this issue is not true. I understand the situation and why that happened and will continue to work on being a better person and making the right choices,” Mam said.

The Mam-Leniu incident in Las Vegas reared it’s head earlier this year when the Roosters enforcer confronted Queensland legend Johnathan Thurston.

Leniu took offence to Thurston’s belief that Leniu should have received a harsher penalty than the eight weeks he did cop for the racial slur.
