‘You won’t come back on’: Real reason ref was left fuming with NSW trainer

The NSW trainer who copped a stern warning from referee Ashley Klein kicked the ball away when Queensland were due to feed a scrum close to the Blues’ line.

Blues trainer Eddie Farah, who is the brother of former NSW hooker Robbie Farah, booted the ball away after a Zac Lomax knock-on early in the second half, with the Blues up 14-2 and winger Brian To’o in the sin bin.

Farah initially handed the ball to Mitchell Moses, before Moses threw it away, upsetting Maroons captain Daly Cherry-Evans, who was ready to feed the scrum 10 metres out from the Blues’ line.

But then Farah caused even more of a disruption to the Maroons by kicking the ball over the dead-ball line.

Referee Ashley Klein gave Farah a first and final warning.

“Trainer, if you do that again you will not come back on the field,” Klein said.

Cherry-Evans was furious, and glanced at Klein while throwing his hands up in the air.

Channel 9’s coverage didn’t pick the incident up, and it can only be seen on spider cam footage.

The Suncorp Stadium crowd booed as Farah ran off the field.

Former Maroons captain Cameron Smith noticed the incident in Channel 9’s commentary.

“A little bit of gamesmanship happening there,” Smith said.

The Maroons didn’t capitalise on their chance though, with Valentine Holmes tackled into touch on the first play of the set.
